The Laboratory of Hydraulic Projects and Environmental Engineering, which covers an area of 300 m22,supports research and teaching in the academic subjects: theoretical, computational and experimental hydraulics of open and closed conduits, irrigation projects, drainage projects, simulation of convection, diffusion, dispersion and pollutant process chemistry, design and management of water resource systems, coastal engineering, wave propagation and oceanography.

It has:

  • Open channel with variable slope, 10 m long, 50 cm wide and 50 cm high that is used both for educational purposes for the laboratory application of the hydraulics courses of open and closed conduits and also for research purposes as experiments are carried out in the context of undergraduate and postgraduate theses as well as PhD theses.
  • Open channel with variable slope, 6.5 m long, 7.5 cm wide and 20 cm high that is used only for teaching purposes.
  • Wave generator with adjustable frequency of movement of a motor through an inverter and with adjustable amplitude of oscillation.
  • HELE-SHAW apparatus for underground flow simulation for the study of salt and fresh water stratification.

The laboratory is equipped with instruments like voltmeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, tachometers, timers etc., computers equipped with programs like MATLAB, AUTOCAD, TECHPLOT which are available and used for the data processing obtained from the experiments.

The laboratory also has:

  • electronic anemometer equipment for measuring instantaneous velocities with X probe sensors
  • P.I.V. (Patricle Image Velocimetry) with Insight 3G software for measuring instantaneous velocities through photographs.
  • computer programs (FLUENT, FLOW 3D, etc.)

In addition, the Laboratory has equipment and instruments related to field measurements in marine hydraulics and oceanography subjects such as mechanical currentmeters for recording sea currents and CTD (instrument for measuring physicochemical parameters of seawater – conductivity, temperature and pressure).

As part of the research activities of the Laboratory, a PhD thesis was completed in 2022:

  • Leousidis Α., (2019-2022). «Experimental and computational determination of fluid (water) velocity profiles in an open channels due to spatial temperature changes», December 2022.

During the last 3 years, experimental and computational work was carried out in the Laboratory, which was published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals:
